Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay quickly was captivated when she showed her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay had a mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to make use of art as a method of expression. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash at the home of a member of jury. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
